Margaret Kirkley Henely Calahan, 88
FALMOUTH - Margaret Kirkley Henely Calahan, 88, formerly of Burlington, Vt., died Jan. 13, 2005 at St. Joseph's Manor in Portland following a brief illness.
Margaret was born in Nora Springs, Iowa on Sept. 3, 1916. She was the daughter of Dr. Edmund Henely and Gertrude Rader Henely. Margaret was a graduate of Mason City High School and Clark College in Dubuque, Iowa, where she majored in dietetics.
Margaret completed her internship in dietetics at Montifore Hospital in New York City and then went to work as a dietitian for the U.S. Government at Bradley Field in Connecticut. There she met her husband, Cal Calahan, a horticulturist and pomologist whose master's degree at University of New Hampshire was interrupted by the war.
They were married April 25, 1943 just before Cal was sent to Europe to serve two years in the Air Force. At the end of the war, Margaret and Cal lived in Durham, N.H., where Cal finished his master's degree in horticulture.
In 1947, they moved to Burlington, Vt., where they settled and raised five children.
Margaret and her family were members of Christ the King Parish. She was a volunteer through the Burlington Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Garden Club, University of Vermont Faculty Wives Club. She was a delegate for New England to the American Dietetics Association and continued to maintain her membership and support of the American Dietetics Association throughout her life. She was employed as a clinical dietitian by the Medical Center of Vermont. Her specialty was her compassionate care of heart and diabetic patients.Margaret and her husband were frequent guests on the Vermont television show 'Across the Fence' where Margaret would prepare her 'famous' apple dishes. In their retirement, Margaret and Cal enjoyed traveling the world, visiting their children and grandchildren and entertaining their friends. Margaret was known for her comfortable but lavish dinner parties.
After her husband's death in 1986, Margaret moved to Falmouth to be closer to her daughters.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Charles Lyman Calahan (Cal Calahan).
She is survived by two sisters, Marcella Thompson of Joplin, Mo., and Dorothy Gillis of Los Angeles, Calif. She is also survived by her five children, Mary Cheney of Charlotte, Vt., Peggy Claffey and her husband, Dr. Thomas Claffey of Falmouth Foreside, Dorothy Anderson and her husband, Larry of Rushville, N.Y., Chuck Calahan and his wife. Dot of Glastonbury, Conn., and Cathy (Cal) Davis and her husband, Dr. Glen Davis of Belgrade.
Her 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren surviving her are David Cheney and his wife, Andrea and their daughter, Madeline all of Fayston, Vt., Scott Cheney and his wife, Dana of Corpus Christi, Texas, Rebecca Cheney Quinn and her husband, Andrew and their daughters, Hannah and Lillian all of Vergennes, Vt., Elizabeth Claffey McEvoy, Esq., and her husband, Steve, and their children, Thomas and Lindley all of Belmont, Mass., Theresa Claffey Carnegie, Esq., and her husband, Les of Washington, D.C., Amy Claffey of Washington, D.C., Sarah Anderson Papabathini and her husband, JPaul, and their children, Jedidah and Elizabeth all of Rushville, N.Y., Mary Anderson of Rushville, N.Y., Jessica Anderson of Rushville, Andrew Anderson of Rushville, Phillip Anderson of Rushville, Lydia Joy Anderson of Rushville, Kathryn Calahan of Glastonbury, Emily Davis of Belgrade, Timothy Davis of Belgrade, and Will Davis of Belgrade.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Martyr's Church, Falmouth on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. Burial will be at a later date in Burlington, Vt. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to: The Center for Grieving Children, P.O. Box 1438 , Portland, Maine 04104
