John Plummer Lair was born March 12, 1940, in Mason City, the youngest child of Virgil and Berdell (Sampson) Lair. He grew up on the family farm and attended school at Rock Falls until 10th grade. He then attended Charles City High School, graduating in 1958. He was employed at White Farm for 26 years. In 1963, he served in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged in 1965. On February 14, 1970 in Blooming Prairie, Minn., he was united in marriage to Cheryl Crandall. To this union, four children were born.

In 1985, he began working for the United States Post Office. His job took him to Perry in 1989, where he worked as a rural mail carrier. Shortly after retirement in 2004, John and Cheryl returned to Charles City. He had a large collection of toy tractors, beer signs, and marbles. He didn't miss many sales and auctions in the area, and would even travel to neighboring states to find a good deal. He looked forward to coffee with his friends at Hy-Vee and playing cards. He took his dream trip to Alaska with Cheryl in 2011. He loved his grandchildren and will be deeply missed.

Living family members include his wife Cheryl; four children, Kelli (Tom) Judisch of Sumner, Dean Lair of Charles City, Jennifer (Brock) Granzow of West Des Moines, and Katie Lair of Charles City; 10 grandchildren, Kason, Cael, Cameryn, Karly, Jordyn, Ryeleigh, Wesley, Levi, Sara, and Layla; a brother, Fred (Janet) Lair of Grove, Okla.; a sister, Patty (Fred) Jones of Bloomington, Minn.; and his mother-in-law, Wilma Crandall of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Virginia Grouette and Mary Ann Warnke.
