MASON CITY— Bill Millard, 85, of Mason City, formerly of Rudd and Nora Springs, died Saturday (March 25, 2006) at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City with the Rev. Harry Koelker officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs. Military rites will be provided by the Nora Springs American Legion Post No. 449.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, with a wake service at 7 p.m., at Sheckler Funeral Home, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs.

William Anthony Millard was born on Sept. 6, 1920, at home in Cylinder, Iowa, the son of William F. and Frances (Gard) Millard.

Bill’s early years were spent in Garner, where he graduated from high school in 1938. He was recognized for both football and track on the state level. He once ran for six touchdowns in a game.

In 1959 Bill, following in his father’s footsteps, began his career as a railroad depot agent and telegrapher for the Milwaukee Railroad. At one time he and his father were first and second on the seniority board for the entire Milwaukee Railroad. Bill retired in 1980 with more than forty years of service to the railroad. Bill was a 50- year member of the Transportation Communication International Union; he was a continuous member in good standing with the American Legion since 1944; a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City; and Nora Springs American Legion Post No. 449.

On October 29, 1944, he was married to Mary Lou Krall at the Church of the Assumption in Little Turkey, Iowa. He had just returned from a two year stint in the U.S. Navy. To this union were born four children, three sons and a daughter.

Bill will always be remembered for his sharp wit, his fishing stories, and his love of his family and Iowa sports.

Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary of Mason City; one daughter, Linda (Ron) Main of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and three sons, Bob (Sandy) of Clarkston, Mich.; Rich (Deb) of Mason City, and Doug (Joni) of Goffstown, N.H. He was blessed with ten grandchildren: five boys, Brian Millard, Tony Millard, Chad Millard, Todd West, and Jon West, and five girls, Becky Cross, Michelle Pasierb, Jamie Millard, Kimberly Millard, and Bethany Hruska. He also has 13 great-grandchildren: Brad and Blake West, Andrew, Nicholas and Lucas Pasierb; Brandon Millard, Kennedy and Garrett Cross, Kaylee Millard, Maya, and Nora Hruska, Ashley and Terence West; and a sister, Mary Coyier, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John.
