RUDD, IOWA - Russell Keith Larson, 78, of 506 Hampton St., died Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 28, at the Rudd United Methodist Church, 611 Sixth St., Rudd, with the Rev. Jerry Avise-Rouse officiating. A private family inurnment will be in the Rudd Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs. Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Russell K. Larson Memorial.

Russell Keith Larson was born February 9, 1933, in Mitchell County, the son of Bert and Rose (Cannon) Larson. He received his education and graduated from Rudd High School in 1951. Russell enlisted into the United States Army, where he was later honorably discharged. Russell was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Dolores Moore on August 17, 1952, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua; to this union four children were born.

Russell farmed north of Rudd along with owning and operating the Rudd Oil Company from 1961-1976. He worked for a short time as a DNR lake patrolman in Clear Lake until starting his chief of police position in Greene, retiring after 13 years of service.

Russell was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing and family camping trips. He had a great talent in woodworking and carving, and enjoyed making furniture for his family. Russell enjoyed cooking and loved to host fish fries for family and friends. He was an active Boy Scout leader for Rudd Troop 46 for 25 years and received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of the American Legion and the Rudd United Methodist Church.

Russell is survived by his children Dana (Janelle Howe) Larson, Rudd; Daryl (Jane Ausen) Larson, Nora Springs; DeeAnn (Gary) Ewen, Dougherty; David Larson, Osage; grandchildren Eric Larson, Nora Springs; Denver Larson, Rudd; Chelsea Ewen, Tripoli; Laura (Aaron) Cunningham, Nora Springs; siblings Loren (Altje) Larson, Osage; Phyllis (James) Gunsallus, Osage; Marvin (Jannis) Larson, Rudd; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leland (Sandra) Moore, Rudd and Larry Moore, Rudd; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Dolores on Oct. 17, 2011, and brother Gordon Larson.
