Dale L. Chestek, age 75 of Charles City died Thursday, October 20, 2011, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for Dale Chestek will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 3-6 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue Monday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Dale Leland Chestek was born February 11, 1936 in Charles City, the son of Leland and Helen (Sturdivant) Chestek. He grew up in rural Colwell and graduated from Colwell Consolidated School in 1953. In 1957, he was united in marriage to Sharon Kruse. The couple later divorced. On March 25, 1966, he married Ruth Hovey-Bass in Charles City. Dale worked as a farmer and shelled corn. He later went to work for Pyle and Tinus Construction in Charles City. In 1985, the couple moved to Texas where he worked construction and then went to work for the State of Texas as a prison guard. The couple returned to Iowa in 1996, where he was currently working as an independent contractor. Carpentry was Dale's passion in life. He held membership at the Moose Lodge while living in Texas.

Living family members include his wife of 45 years, Ruth Chestek of Charles City; two daughters, Julie and Jill; a son, Dean Chestek (Dawn Sowell) of Copperas Cove, Texas; three step-children, Karen (David) Youngerman, James (Penny) Bass both of Charles City, Dennis (Lisa) Bass, of Belton, Texas; two grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 16 step-great grandchildren; two step-great-great grandchildren; a brother Gordon (Sue) Chestek of Colo.; a sister, Barbara (Alan) Meints of Clear Lake; a brother-in-law, George (LuJayne) Hovey of Houston, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Betty Hovey and Katherine Hovey both of Charles City; two special friends, Donna Meyer and Tammy Roney both of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Alan; a step-grandson, Scott Bass; three brothers-in-law, Glen Hovey, Kenneth Hovey, and Raymond Hovey.
