Bernice Mary (Bauer) Emmel 1917-2006

Bernice M. Emmel, 89, of 600 Freeman St. in Charles City died Wednesday evening, March 8, 2006, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 13, at the First Christian Church, 807 S. Main St. in Charles City with the Rev. Margaret Hutchens and the Rev. Phil Corr officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. The family will greet relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home in Charles City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to Bernice’s services Monday at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the First Christian Church, 807 S. Main St., Charles City, IA 50616.

Bernice Mary Emmel was born January 2, 1917, to Lawrence and Elva (Barker) Bauer in Cresco. She attended and graduated school in Charles City.

Bernice was united in marriage to John H. Emmel on March 23, 1937. Bernice had been a homemaker throughout the years. She had lived in Charles City for 87 years. Bernice was devoted to her faith and very active in the First Christian Church in Charles City. She was a member of church, a pianist for the church, a Deaconess and Elder, she sang in the church choir, was a Sunday school teacher and involved with the building committee, all with the First Christian Church in Charles City.

Other organizations that Bernice was involved in throughout her life included, the Central Star Club, the ’34 Gals and participating as 4-H club leader.

Survivors include, her husband, John H. Emmel of Charles City; three daughters: Marjorie (Joe) Cromey of Albuquerque, N.M., Darlene (Dean) Vincent of West Chester, Ohio, and Joyce (Richard) Knight of Floyd; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Elva Bauer; an infant grandson and her brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Jean Bauer.
