Memorial services for Raymond S. Daughenbaugh, 83, of Greene, were held Friday, January 27, 2006, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, where military rites were conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City at a later date.

Raymond Siegel Daughenbaugh was born August 29, 1922 in Charles City, a son of Dale and Addie Louella (Teedy) Daughenbaugh, and died Monday, January 23, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

He received his education in the Charles City Public Schools graduating in 1941. During and following high school he worked part-time for Harvey’s Jack Spratt Grocery, as a sales clerk and butcher. On September 23, 1941, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater from October 15, 1942 to November 27, 1944. He participated in action at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Paleliu. He was Honorably discharged on September 26, 1945.

Raymond was united in marriage to Helen Naudine Lumsdon in Charles City. They made their home in Charles City, where he worked at the Oliver Tractor Works. In 1952 they moved to Ventura County, California where he began his career as an Engineering Technician with Pacific Missile Range at Point Mugu. During his career he was awarded 23 patents which many are still used today in both military and civilian applications.

His inventions include the seat built for one of the first monkeys in space, an underwater demolition device, and a self inflating life raft, to mention just a few. He retired in 1973.

In 1974, Raymond and his family moved to Greene to be close to other family members. Ever since Raymond was a child, he had a great love for horses. While living in California, he helped friends who were cattle ranchers, as a weekend cowboy. Tony, his favorite Palomino stallion, placed second at the California State Fair. Later he acquired his pride and joy, Adios Judy, a registered quarter horse. He and Judy were considered one of the best heeling roping teams around. His retirement hobbies were raising ponies, and designing and building sleighs and buggies. He also enjoyed going to horse sales throughout the mid west.

Living family members include his loving wife of 60 years, Naudine of Greene, two daughters: Susan Kay (Gary) Koehler of Rochester, Minnesota, Lou Ann (Gary) Gibson of Greene; one son: Glen Ray Daughenbaugh of Mason City, three grandchildren: Casey Ray Daughenbaugh, Lee Patrick Daughenbaugh, and Adeline Jane Gibson; one brother: Fay Calvin Daughenbaugh of Salinas, California.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Glen Daughenbaugh.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the family. Reid’s Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
