Alice Mary (King) Hoel - 1886-1941

FORMER RESIDENT OF RUDD DIES; SERVICES TO BE AT WATERLOO

Rudd – Funeral services for Mrs. Arthur Hoel will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Walnut Street Baptist Church in Waterloo, with the Rev. R. T. Ketcham officiating.
Burial will be in Osage.
Mrs. Hoel died Thursday. She moved to Waterloo 12 years ago.

Surviving are her husband, a son, Merlin of San Miguel, California, a daughter; Mrs. Floyd Brinker of Waterloo; one grand-daughter, and her mother; Mrs. August Dahn of Waterloo.

Alice Mary King was born November. 1886 in South Dakota, the daughter of William King and Mary (Elliott) King. Her mother Mary (Elliott) King was married a second time, in 1900, to August Dahn.
Alice married Arthur Hoel, the son of Aaron and Emily Elizabeth (Skelton) Hoel.

Please note that the census did not list the relationships correctly. Edward Elliott and Mary Ann (Elliott) King were brother and sister. Alice Mary King is the niece to Edward Elliott, not a granddaughter. Edward and Mary Ann were the children of Thomas Elliott II and his wife Jane Webb.

Thomas Elliott II – born 1809 in Ireland died 1882
Jane (Webb) Elliott – b. 1812 in Ireland died October 20, 1896
Thomas and Jane are both buried in the Osage Cemetery in Osage, Iowa
They were the parents of:
1. Edward Elliott
b. June 28, 1837 Mt. Morris, Livingston County, New York
d. June 19, 1913 Burial Osage Cemetery in Osage, Iowa (never married)

2. George Elliott
b. August 31, 1840 Mt. Morris, Livingston County, New York
d. February 24, 1884 Rudd, Floyd County, Iowa burial Osage Cemetery, Osage, Iowa
married – Lydia Smith

3. Thomas Elliott III
b. 1841 Mt. Morris, Livingston County, New York
d. March 14, 1898 also buried in the Osage Cemetery (he never married)

4. Margaret “Maggie” Elliott
b. May 1843 Mt. Morris, Livingston County, New York
d. July 6, 1918 burial in the Osage Cemetery
married – April 4, 1885 Floyd County, Iowa
John Webb –b. 1850 in Ireland, son of George Webb and Mary Brown
d. February 21, 1914 Rudd Township, Floyd County, Iowa
They had an infant born and died on September 20, 1886 who is also buried in the Osage Cemetery

5. Elizabeth Jane “Lizzie” Ellliott
b. 1845 Mt. Morris Livingston County, New York
d. December 6, 1870 Rudd Township, Floyd County, Iowa
She never married and is also buried in the Osage Cemetery

6. John W. Elliott
b. November 4, 1847 Polk District, near Slingersville, Washington County, Wisconsin
married – June 13, 1880 to Emma A. (Gallup) Neville
They had a daughter named Elsie, perhaps more children. In 1913 John was living in California

7. William S. Elliott
b.1850 Polk District, near Slingersville, Washington County, Wisconsin
In 1913, he was living in Brookings, South Dakota

8. Mary Ann Elliott
b. July 4, 1852 Polk district, near Slingersville, Washington County, Wisconsin
d. May 9, 1943 Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa
1st married and later divorced William King (father of the above Alice Mary (King) Hoel
2nd marriage was on October 21, 1908 to August Dahn- no children in that marriage.

Mary Ann is buried in the Osage Cemetery
Besides Alice, Mary Ann and William King were the parents of Edith Elizabeth Margaret “Maggie” King. Her obit is also posted in the Floyd County obituary section.
