GREENE, IOWA — Funeral services for longtime Greene businessman, Darrel A. Barth, 88, of 502 West Traer, Apt. 1, Greene, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene, where there will be a public Scripture Service and Service of Remembrance at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Thursday .
Darrel Andrew Barth was born on Feb. 23, 1917, in rural Union Township, Floyd County, a son of Harry Franklin and Mae Edna (Fisher) Barth, and died Sunday (April 3, 2005) at the Hospice Unit of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
He received his education in the rural Floyd County Schools and the Greene Public Schools. As a young man, he farmed with his father until 1947 when he joined Barth Chevrolet in Greene.
On May 26, 1940, he was united in marriage to Roberta M. Boyd in Charles City. To this union were blessed six children.
Fuzz coached and played fast-pitch softball and organized teams under the church leagues, Barth Trucking, and Barth Chevrolet from the early 1940s to the mid 1960s. He also sponsored the Barth Chevrolet Bowling Team for many years.
He and Roberta went on many Chevy-sponsored trips, including Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. They spent their winters in Florida for twenty-five years.
Fuzz was a huge sports fan, especially following the Hawkeyes, the Vikings, and any sport his grandkids were playing. He was an avid bowler, golfer, and loved to go "Up North" fishing.
Darrel was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Trustee and an Elder.
He was a member of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association, Butler County Dealers Association, Greene, Commercial Club, and a member of the Round Grove Golf & Country Club, where he enjoyed helping mow the fairways.
He is survived by his loving wife and companion of nearly 65 years, Roberta of Greene; three sons: Bob (Rita) Barth, Greene, Kenny Barth, Clarion, and Harry (Jean) Barth, Tipton; two daughters: Barbara (Jim) Killoran, Dubuque, and Linda (Mel) Anderson, Tripoli, 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte O'Brien, Greene; and an aunt, Geneva Martin of Charles City.
Darrel was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Barth (1977); his parents; and one brother, Mervin Barth (1959).
