NORA SPRINGS, IOWA — Edna L. Shanks, 65, of Nora Springs, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2005) at Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Wendy Johannesen and the Rev. Jim Turner officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Edna Lee Shanks was born Dec. 19, 1939, at Bristow, a daughter of Chris and Clara (Pohl) Ubben.

Edna was a 1958 graduate of Dumont Community High School. She worked at Lutheran Mutual Insurance Co., Waverly, until 1965.

She married Clark Mathers on Oct. 27, 1964. They farmed south of Nora Springs for many years. Clark preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 1985.

On July 19, 1986, Edna married Duane Shanks in Nora Springs. They farmed until retiring in 1990.

She enjoyed many activities, including, cooking, sewing, crafts, crocheting afghans, bowling, camping, playing cards, and traveling.

Edna and Duane spent several winters in Mesa, Ariz. She was an avid Hawkeye fan. She especially loved her grandchildren, family and friends.

Her memberships included, First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, where she served as financial secretary and was active on many committees.

A 4-H leader for the Rock Grove Rockettes and active in the Floyd County Porkettes, Edna also belonged to a bridge club.

She is survived by her husband, Duane Shanks, of Nora Springs; a daughter, Rhonda George and her husband, Scott, of Alleman, Iowa; a son, Gary Shanks and his wife, Candy, of Bettendorf; four grandchildren, Travis and Andrew George, Allison and Carolyn Shanks; one brother, Russ Ubben and his wife, Lorraine, of Dumont; a sister, Marilyn McCool and her husband, Ken, of Long Grove; a nephew, Keith Ubben and his wife, Becky, of Bristow; and two great-nieces, Samantha and Tabitha Ubben.

Her parents also preceded her in death.
