GILBERT J. BERGSTROM
CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Gilbert J. Bergstrom, 84, of 906 Sixth Ave., died Monday (Sept. 2, 2002) at 29 Reno Drive, Cabot, Arkansas.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery with full military rites done by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, and again one hour prior to service time at the church.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Gilbert J. Bergstrom Memorial Fund.
Gilbert was born on December 30, 1917, in St. Cloud, Minn., the son of John and Anna (Bahnsen) Bergstrom. He attended school in Charles City and then moved to California from 1937 to 1939 while working at Clifton Restaurant.
Gilbert joined the Army-Air Corps on March 3, 1942, in Fort Des Moines, serving during World War II, and received an honorable discharge at Fort Sheridan, Ill., on Nov. 15, 1945.
Gilbert was united in marriage to Vivian Weiler Young on January 9, 1947, on Vivian's parents farm in Charles City, where he helped his mother-in-law, Bertha Kinsey, farm for about 10 years.
Gilbert was a member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elk's Club member for more than 50 years, and a former member of the VFW in Charles City. Gilbert was a superintendent, sexton of Riverside Cemetery for 40 years, while working for Charles City Granite for many years before retiring in 1989.
Gilbert enjoyed his work meeting people. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling.
Gilbert is survived by his son, Jeff and his wife, Linda, of Charles City; one sister, Viola Newton and her husband, Fred, of Charles City; a special friend, Ruth Dobbins, of Cabot, Ark.; three grandchildren, Jon Bergstrom and his wife, Denise, of Riceville, Bridget Fee and her husband, Brad, of Charles City, and Jennifer Bergstrom, of Mason City; three great-grandchildren, Christopher and Brandon Bergstrom, and Jasmine Fee.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vivian in 1986; and one sister, Betty Bergstrom.
