Former Floyd
Man Drowns

CHARLES CITY, IOWA — A birthday celebration near Dubuque Monday ended in the death by drowning of William Arron Hough, 58, a former resident of Floyd, lowa.

Mr. Hough, on convalescent leave from a job as guard at the Algonquin Chemical Co., Dubuque, was one of a party of relatives picnicking near Waupeton on the Mississippi River Monday.

According to members of the party, he joined a group of men swimming in the river shortly after lunch, at about 2 p. m. They left a buoy some 100 feet offshore, witnesses said, with Mr. Hough insisting he could "make it to shore."

Only a few strokes from the buoy he began to sink, men of the party reported. Knowing he had been in ill health, they had been swimming alongside him, but he slipped from their grasp.

A three-hour search by relatives and a Dubuque county sheriff's party, which arrived when the drowning was reported, was necessary before the body was found some 50 feet offshore.

The celebration had been in honor of the victim's nephew, Leonard Steele, with whom he had made his home since moving to Dubuque nine years ago.

Other survivors are his sisters, Mrs. Olive Bogardt, Charles City, and Mrs. Rosa Snyder, Dubuque.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City. Salvation Capt. Clara Spargo will officiate, and burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd.
