DEAN E. EICHMEIER

ROCKFORD - Dean E. Eichmeier, 76, of 2050 Hickory, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Rockford, with the Rev. Marjorie Bradshaw officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church Saturday. Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 301 W. Main, Rockford, assisted the family with arrangements.

Dean was born the second son to Henry B. and Florence (Sadler) Eichmeier on the family farm east of Rockford on July 16, 1925. He attended rural school near his home. It was important that he follow in his father, Henry's, and brother, Earl's, footsteps in learning to care for the farm animals and the land. The "boys," as he and his brother came to be known, helped their mother, Florence, with the household duties, in addition to the farm work, thereby sharing her load, especially while their grandfather was living with them.

Dean had the usual growing up years, with puppies and cats and being outdoors, a love he never outgrew. One special pleasure was a Shetland pony and a two-wheeled cart. Many fun trips were made on the dusty country roads, giving rides to the neighbors. The family shared radio time with neighbors who had no radio. The family worked hard during the week, then went to town for groceries on Saturday. Sundays were days of rest except maybe going for a ride through the countryside or visiting with neighbors and relatives.

Following their father's death, Dean and Earl took over the farm duties together, sharing the work. Having acquired another farmstead a short distance away, there were chores to do there, too, and one could almost set a clock by the time that they went each morning and evening, driving their pickup or walking, wearing their sheepskin coats.

The family belonged to the Neighborly Club, which met once a month at different homes where talents were shared or they heard speakers on such topics as "The Townsend Plan." Dean learned early the importance of good farming practices and being a good neighbor and continued to be interested even into his later years.

Earl and Dean were almost inseparable, always together, no matter where or what the situation was. So life became difficult after Earl's death in 1997. Dean continued with farming until his health started to fail.

Dean was a caring person and was always quick to respond to help his neighbors. He was devoted to his parents and brother, living a special life which was filled with service to mankind.

Dean is survived by three cousins, LaVonne Eichmeier and Vera Barnett, both of Rockford, and Donna Tumilson, Green Valley, Mo.; caregivers, Craig and Merlyn Schweizer and Chad and Rich LaCoste and their families; and a host of friends and caring neighbors with a lifetime of memories.

Those who preceded him in death include his parents; his only brother, Earl, in November 1997; and a cousin, Bernice Eichmeier.
