#2: (105th Birthday Celebration)

Floyd County Farmer Reaches 105th Birthday

NORA SPRINGS, IOWA — Few persons reach the age of 105. Of those who do, fewer still are bright and alert and interested in what is going on in the world about them as is Abraham Mullen.

Mr. Mullen celebrated his 105th birthday at the Nora Springs Nursing Home. His daughter, Mrs. William Pint, of Floyd, baked a cake for him and she and Mrs. Robert Pint of Charles City celebrated with him. He has been making his home in the Nora Springs Nursing Home for about a month. Before this time he had lived with his daughter at Floyd.

Mr. Mullen was born in 1860 in Lynville, Rockingham County, Virginia. He came to Iowa to live in 1903 and was occupied as a carpenter for many years. He later farmed in surrounding areas and also spent some of his life in Illinois, Ohio, Canada and Wyoming. He moved with his family in 1915 to Gillette, Wyoming, where the family homesteaded. Due to dry weather they returned to Iowa after selling his land there.

"Abe" as he likes to be called, has a clear memory of days when he worked at the carpenter trade and farmed. He stated that he was a champion corn picker, "by hand, not like it is done now." He has a keen interest in the Twins baseball team and listens to their games on his radio.

He also is greatly interested in politics and declares himself to be a staunch Democrat, "though I have voted for a lot of Republicans when I felt they were good honest men and knew what they were doing," he said. He voted for Johnson in the last election. At one time he was a lay minister for the Methodist, Church and was active in church while he was
able.

Mr. Mullen was married twice. He had one son from his first marriage whom he has not heard from in several years.

His second wife, Mrs. Frances Fox Mullen, died in 1957, The couple had 12 children, six of whom are still living; Mrs. Bertha Jenkins, Burbank, California; W. L. Mullen, Marble Rock; John Mullen, Rockwell; Ben Mullen, Floyd County Home; Mrs. William (Bessie) Pint, Floyd and Andrew Mullen, Algona. He has 40 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren.

While he cannot remember the Civil War or President Lincoln, he remembers his family taking a former slave and her son to live with them and helping that son to start farming.

He spent much time in his youth fishing and hunting, out of necessity as well as sport. He said he had known many Indians and found them to be friendly.

Mullen attributes his, longevity to his use of tobacco, having used it for 95 years. Hard work and interest in world affairs and people, has made 105 years of good living for Abraham Mullen.
