6-Year-Old Killed
By School Bus

MARBLE ROCK, IOWA - A 6-year-old boy died Tuesday after being struck by the school bus he left moments earlier.

Derick Wharton, a first-grader, had just gotten off the bus near his home in Marble Rock about 4 p.m. when the accident occurred near the intersection of Maple and Hutches streets.

Ronald "Butch" Navratil, 58, of rural Rockford, was driving the bus for the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School District, according to the Floyd County Sheriff's Office.

After letting students off, Navratil made an unusually wide turn at the corner to avoid two girls crossing the street, said Gary Schwartz, superintendent of the school district. The rear wheels of the bus then ran over Derick, Schwartz said.

Derick was pronounced dead at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Counselors, social workers and psychologists were available today at the school in Rockford to talk to students and staff members.

"All we are doing is trying to deal with the situation and to help students and staff and the community deal with the loss of the student," Schwartz said. "It's devastating to the community and to the school district."

The Floyd County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol are investigating the accident.
