DONALD M. CURL

CHARLES CITY - Donald M. Curl, 88, died Tuesday (Sept. 4, 2001) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

The funeral for Donald will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery. There will be a luncheon following the graveside service at the Senior Center of Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with a wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Saturday.

Donald was born Aug. 28, 1913, in Tyndall, S.D., the son of Norris and Grace (Sekander) Curl.

On Feb.7, 1942, in Charles City, he was united in marriage to Lola W. Bucknell. The couple made their home briefly in South Dakota until he left to serve his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in Central Europe from Dec. 17, 1942 to Jan. 9, 1946. Donald's service decorations and citations include two Overseas Service Bars, one Service Stripe, American Campaign Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal.

They returned to the Charles City area where he farmed and worked for USDA-ASE office up until he retired 17 years ago.

Donald was a member of the American Legion, VFW and served on the board of directors for the Twin Cedar Dairy.

He enjoyed the many trips that he and Lola took with the Heritage Club, watching girl's softball, spending time with his family and playing cards with friends.

He had a knack when it came to playing checkers. He smiled when he was offered a challenge, knowing his strategies would win him the victory. Every so often, however, he would be taken by surprise and his opponent would win.

Those thankful for sharing Donald's life include two daughters, Colleen Springer, of Charles City, and Marjorie Leavene and her husband, Bob, of Columbia, Mo.; two sons, Thomas Curl and his wife, Kathleen, of Ionia, and Bill Curl, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola; his parents, three brothers, and one sister.

Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, (641) 228-4211.
