DOROTHY ZIPSE

CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Dorothy Zipse, 100 years, 8 months, of the Star Home, formerly of 601 N. Johnson St., Charles City, died Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 28, 2001) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with a 3 p.m. rosary conducted by St. Anthony's Circle and a parish scripture service at 7 p.m. conducted by Sr. Jennifer Rausch. Visitation will also be held one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Dorothy was born on Dec. 28, 1900, one of 10 children to George and Minnie (Lipp) Hauser on a farm near Ionia. She attended school in that area. On Nov. 14, 1922, she was united in marriage to W.R. Zipse at the Rectory of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. To this union was born two children.

W.R. and Dorothy made their home in New Hampton, moving from there in 1935 to Cresco. While in Cresco, she worked at Warner's Department Store in sales.

In 1943 she and her husband joined business hands and opened and operated Zipse's Tavern in Charles City and later owned and operated the Frontier Club for 10 years.

In 1951 they changed business directions and purchased the Hart Court Motel until their retirement in 1960.

Dorothy was active in her membership at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with St. Anthony's Circle and the Rosary Society. Dorothy and her husband were active card players, playing 500 and bridge.

She also was a member of the Heritage Club and enjoyed traveling with them. When she was 85 she took her last big trip to Hawaii. She also traveled many times during the 1990s to Denver to be with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorothy had a continuous rummage sale going just for the pleasure of meeting the people. She was an excellent seamstress, had a green thumb with her house plants and was a great hostess for family and friends by having coffee and cookies (especially Ginger Creams) whenever someone stopped by.

She enjoyed reading and having fish and wild game feeds for her family with food her husband caught and hunted. Her sisters had a love for dealing in antiques while Dorothy bought them.

Those thankful in sharing Dorothy's full and amazing life include her daughter and best friend, Dotta Bissonnette, of Charles City; her seven grandchildren, Catherine Frampton, Willi Zipse-Grimm, Elwood Zipse Jr., twin granddaughters Dawn M. Eisinger and Diana L. Speed, Heather D. Meyer, and Renee I. D'Aloia; 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Bissonnette; five sisters, Cora Eischeid, Esther Hoger, Gertrude Winn, Ruth Gerlach and Lena Lynch; and four brothers, Walter, Harold, Raymond and Gallus Hauser.
