LESTER ALVIN DIEGEL

NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Lester Alvin Diegel, 90, of 115 N. Boulder, Nora Springs, died Monday (July 2, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Thomas Healey, Hospice chaplain, officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, and will continue one hour prior to service time at the church on Friday.

Lester was born June 4, 1911, the letzte (last) child of German immigrants, John Adam Diegel and Anna Morische Diegel, on a farm near Cartersville, Iowa. Older siblings, now deceased, were Barbara Evans, Harold Diegel and Calvin Diegel.

When Lester was a baby, the family moved to a farm north of Nora Springs where he grew up. He joined his father farming after graduating from Nora Springs High School in 1929.

On June 19, 1943, Lester was united in marriage to Nina Venola Steidl. Twin daughters were given to this union, Mary Ann and Linda Diane.

The couple worked together on the family farm until retiring in 1975 and moving to Nora Springs. In retirement, Lester enjoyed gardening and sharing the produce with family and friends. The couple celebrated 58 wonderful years of marriage.

Lester was a longtime member of the Nora Springs First United Methodist Church. He served on the boards of directors for the Nora Springs Farmers Elevator and Park Cemetery.

Lester was blessed with a loving wife, a strong faith, a kind heart and a fiery spirit. Some of his life's values were love for his family, pride and reverence for farming and the land, hard work, education and world issues, friendships and the Iowa Hawkeye football team.

He was very proud of his six grandchildren, Brendon and Christian Snell, and Megan, Laura, Julia and Elise Duvall. He enjoyed attending many of the activities in which they were involved, and talking with them around the Sunday dinner table.

Lester will be fondly remembered and missed by his family, including his wife, Venola; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Brian Snell of Nora Springs, and Linda and Stephen Duvall of Mason City; six grandchildren; nephews, Charles Diegel of Nora Springs and Larry Diegel of San Diego, Calif.; niece, Barbara Ruth Randson, of Mesa, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Diegel, of Mesa, Ariz..

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
