LaVern Schwickerath, 73, of Charles City, died Sunday, January 23, 2011, at his home.

A funeral Mass for LaVern Schwickerath will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary lead by the Knights of Columbus.

LaVern Leo Schwickerath was born September 14, 1937, in Chickasaw County, the son of Victor and Rose (Gebel) Schwickerath. He graduated from St. William of Alta Vista. LaVern served in the United States Army from 1955-1958. On September 21, 1957, he was united in marriage to Marlene Elliott at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. LaVern was a foreman in the chemical plant at Salsbury/Solvay/Cambrex for over 40 years. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and V.F.W. LaVern’s interests included playing cards, going on casino bus trips and being a snowbird to Apache Junction, Ariz. Family was always important to LaVern and he took every opportunity to share his life with them.

Living family members include his wife, Marlene Schwickerath of Charles City; three children, Kathleen Waite of Cedar Rapids, Al Schwickerath of Charles City and Anthony (Jen) Schwickerath of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren, Ashley and Echo; a brother, Clair (Tina) Schwickerath of Maryland; four sisters, Ellen Wiest of Ft. Atkinson, Arlene (Mike) Heying of Alta Vista, Mildred Webber of Independence and Doris (Sylvester) Mrachek of Schley; and his special dog, Daisey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Earl Schwickerath.
