Harvey was born on Sept. 16, 1905, one of six children of Frederick and Margaret L. (Noss) Gabel. He was born in Ulster Township, rural Rockford. He attended rural school in Ulster Township.

Harvey then engaged in farming and was very active even after he said he was retired. He served on the elevator board in Marble Rock and was on the Parish Council at St. Mary's, of which he was a member.

Harvey was united in marriage to Gertrude Jane Allen on February 14, 1931. She preceded him in death in December of 1953. He then was united in marriage to Celeste Mary Havey Harlis on June 30, 1956, and this marriage lasted until her death in August of 1988.

Harvey was a former member of the Moose and the Elks lodges. If someone had a need for Harvey's skills in plumbing and electrical work, he was always willing to help. When he built one of his homes he did the work and in his other home he redid all the plumbing and electrical work.

Harvey was also talented in mechanical work and did anything he could on his machinery and cars. He also loved to dance and could be found dancing at his clubs and at the Surf and Turp ballrooms. He enjoyed traveling to Canada several times a year to fish with his wife.

Those thankful for sharing Harvey's life include his son, Richard, and his wife, Phyllis Gabel, of Rockford; eight grandchildren, Karen, Bernice, Benita, Bruce, Harvey, Jeff, Rick and Marnie; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Ruth Duncan, of Charles City; and one brother, Oscar Gabel, of Rockford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Gertrude and Celeste; his daughter, Marilyn Wills; and three brothers, Wilbur, Edgar "Ted" and Carl Gabel.
