NORA SPRINGS - Harold R. Witt, 77, passed away Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Burial will be at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, with military rites performed by American Legion Post No. 449.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel in Nora Springs with a scriptural vigil service beginning at 7 p.m.
Harold was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Nora Springs, son of William and Myrtie (Pribbenow) Witt. He graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1940. On Sept. 19, 1943, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served as a Gunner's Mate 3rd Class on the U.S.S. Long Island. He received his honorable discharge on March 22, 1946, and then started his farming career.
He was united in marriage to Margaret Genevieve Fitzgerald on Nov. 30, 1946, at St. Joseph's rectory in Mason City. Harold was a lifetime farmer, farming together with his brother, Dale Witt, for 31 years in the Nora Springs area and worked in the winter months for Jacob E. Decker Packing Plant for several years. He moved to town in 1981 and retired from farming in 1985.
Following retirement he enjoyed working for Rethamel Construction, Marshall Farms and refinishing furniture. He enjoyed his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He liked to travel and made several trips to various parts of the United States. He also enjoyed watching sports on television and reading Louis L' Amour books. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 449 and past member, as well as served on the Board of Directors, of the Nora Springs Coop.
Harold is survived by his wife, Genevieve, of Nora Springs; his son Bill and his wife, Nancy, of Nora Springs; daughter, Barbara O'Donnell and her husband, Dennis, of Mason City; son Jim and his wife, Pam, of Mason City; and daughter Jolene Juhl and her husband, David, of St. Ansgar; grandchildren, Paul Witt and his wife, Heather, of South Charleston, W. V., Christie Witt of Granite Falls, Minn., Jarod Brallier and special friend, Liz French, Nick O'Dell of Mason City, Nicole Seybert and her husband, Steve, of Nora Springs, Jeremy Witt and his wife, Mary, of Mason City, Randy Juhl and his wife, Kim, of Apple Valley, Minn., Michael Juhl and special friend, Julie Hansen, of St. Ansgar; step-grandchildren, Tiffany O'Donnell and Nick O'Donnell, both of Cottonwood, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Colin Witt, Evan Seybert, Maysen Simmer, Paisley Witt and Caitlyn Juhl; his brother, Dale Witt, of Nora Springs; sister Bonnie Billings and her husband, Jim, also of Nora Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Edna Hallabrin; his grandson, Jonathan Paul Juhl; his nephew, Bruce Billings; and his son-in-law, James Brallier.
