Death: November 27, 2010Sophie Smith, 89, of Charles City, died Saturday, November 27, 2010, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
Funeral services for Sophie Smith will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Reverend Joseph Mirowski of the Greek Orthodox Church of Transfiguration will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Mason City.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Sophie Negomir Smith was born May 2, 1921, in Mason City, the daughter of Nicholas and Amelia (Knezovich) Negomir. She graduated from Mason City High School, Mason City Jr. College and attended St. Louis University.
Sophie served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II. On October 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to Clyde Wheeler Smith in Tampa, Florida. Sophie was employed for 37 years at McDonnell Douglas at St. Louis, Missouri, in the aeronautics engineering department. She was a member of the American Legion and Air Force Association. Her interests included cooking, sewing and doing crafts.
Living family members include her nieces and nephews, Richard Chuick, Robert Chuick, Charles Chorak, Johanna Amelia Chorak, Nick Chuick, Donna Gould, Linda Groesbeck and Bill Hitzhuzen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on April 4, 2001; infant son, John Nicholas on August 8, 1946; three sisters; and two brothers.
