MARBLE ROCK, IOWA - A funeral Mass for Edwin J. Goetzinger, 95, of 117 Iowa Street, Marble Rock, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, with the Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery at Roseville.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a Rosary service.

Edwin J. Goetzinger was born on January 29, 1904, at Luxemburg, Dubuque County, Iowa, a son of John and Anna (Menke) Goetzinger, and died Thursday (April 1, 1999) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

He lived and worked his entire life in Iowa, growing up in Bancroft, where the family moved when he was two months old. At the age of 14, he began work in a series of family-owned businesses including a wagon factory in Dyersville and a creamery in Rockford. At the start of the Depression, he helped complete the construction and brickwork of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia, where his uncle, the Rev. Charles Goetzinger, served as parish priest.

On Sept. 11, 1934, he was united in marriage to Lydia Dominica Bisenius at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. The couple made their home in Marble Rock where they raised four children. Together, Ed and Lydia, known as "Jimmy," owned and operated Goetzinger's Store, selling hardware, groceries and dry goods. Ed also operated a bottled liquid propane gas business and served the community as a carpenter and painter well into his 70s.

Ed and Jimmy traveled extensively in the lower 48 states before building a winter home in Arkansas. Ed was an avid baseball player in his early years, then a tennis player in later years. Music always played an important part in Ed's life. As a young man he played several instruments in his own band, performing throughout Eastern Iowa. Since 1992 he played piano weekly for residents of the care centers in Charles City.

He will be remembered for the many hours he spent working with his beautiful gardens and the immaculate condition he kept his yard. Ed and Jimmy were faithful members of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville and he was a charter member of the Marble Rock Lions Club.

Living family members include his two daughters and their spouses, Janice and Earl Parcher of Marble Rock and Nancy Goetzinger and Thomas Ramsay of Minneapolis, Minn.; two sons and their spouses, Charles and Loretta Goetzinger of Chanhassen, Minn., and Robert and Dorothy Goetzinger of Hiawatha; nine grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one step granddaughter; one step great-grandson; and his sister, Helen Alvaro of Springfield, Mass.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 23, 1991; three sisters, Esther Goetzinger, Leona Goetzinger and Irene Albang; and three brothers, Otto Goetzinger, Leo Goetzinger and Gerald Goetzinger.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Edwin J. Goetzinger Memorial Fund in care of the family.
