Mary Elizabeth Bishop Waters
NORA SPRINGS - Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Bishop Waters, 74, passed away Saturday evening (March 6, 1999) at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs, due to diabetes and a heart condition.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Nora Springs Christian Church with the Rev. Greg Lugn officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel in Nora Springs.
Memorials may be given to the Mary (Betty) Waters Memorial Fund.
Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Waters was born March 2, 1925, to Sereno and Gladys (Allen) Bishop, rural Rudd, Iowa. She observed her 74th birthday on Tuesday, March 2.
Betty always lived in the Nora Springs and Rudd areas. She graduated from Rudd High School in 1942. On Aug. 12, 1945, she and Richard Eli Waters were married at the Will Allen home in Rudd. This was while Eli was still enlisted in the United States Army. Following his discharge, they farmed in the Rockford, Floyd and Nora Springs areas, until moving into Nora Springs. Betty was employed as a bookkeeper and driver for the late Dr. L.A. Bascom. She was a licensed administrator for the Care Center. Betty was active in the Christian Church for 60 years, serving on various committees and offices.
Betty and her late husband enjoyed camping, traveling and attending blue grass festivals. They were members of the Wig-Wam Wagon Camping Group and received the Camper of the Year Award in 1983.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family. She is survived by a daughter, Rose Mary Anderson and her husband, Dan, of Mason City; two sons, Richard Larry Waters and his wife, Lori, of Owatonna, Minn., and Donald Waters and his wife, Pat, of Oelwein; nine grandchildren, Craig Anderson, Randy Anderson, Lori Koresh, Tim Waters, Tammy Ries, Jason Waters, Trisha Miller, Brent Waters, and Nick Waters; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Ruth Waters and her husband, Charles, of Nora Springs; a brother, Carroll Bishop and his wife, Joyce, of Osage; sisters-in-law, Esther Bishop of Cedar Falls, Gladys Waters of Rockford, and Lois Hibner and her husband, Jim, of Ames; a brother-in-law, Junior Waters and his wife, Lorrie, of Plymouth; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Eli Waters on June 19, 1997; a brother, Robert Bishop on Sept. 30, 1998; her parents (mother in 1975, and father in 1979); a brother, David, in 1983; a niece, Shari Hibner in 1986; and two infant great-nephews, Travis Waters and Corey Le Seur.
