MARBLE ROCK, IOWA — Gregory J. Marzen, 49, of 210 Hutches Street, Marble Rock, died Friday (Feb. 26, 1999) at the Routt Memorial Hospital, in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, 1999, at the United Methodist Church in Rockford, with Pastor Rosemary Rohde-Frank and Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock, with graveside military rites conducted by Stroud Gates Post 387 American Legion of Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, in Marble Rock, with a public scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Visitation will be 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock where there will be a public scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday at the church one hour before services.

Gregory John Marzen was born December 5, 1949 at the Dolan Hospital in Greene, Iowa and died Friday, (February 26, 1999) at the Routt Memorial Hospital in Steamboat Springs, Colorado of an apparent heart attack while on vacation there.

He received his education at the St. Patrick's School in Dougherty and graduated from the Rockford Sr. High School in 1967. On December 11, 1967, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served on the U.S.S. Lexington and later at the Naval Air Station at Lakehurst, New Jersey. He was honorably discharged on May 1, 1970. He then attended North Iowa Area Community in Mason City where he graduated with an Associates Degree in Agriculture Mechanics with high honors.

Greg was first employed as a service representative for White Farm Manufacturing in Charles City and began farming on his own in 1975 near Dougherty. Greg was very progressive and innovative in his farming operation, always keeping an eye towards the future in Agriculture. He was one of the first farmers in the area to use no-till method and was one of the first in the area to facilitate ethanol production. Greg was very active in woodland management and was recognized in 1996 for his efforts by the Floyd County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was an active member of the American Soybean Association and the National Corngrowers Association. He was an associate member of the United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee and later chairman of the Administrative Council.

On June 27, 1987 he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Feltus at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock. Since their marriage they had made their home in Marble Rock. Greg was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, and snowmobiling. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather always interested in the welfare of his family.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Mary Lou, of Marble Rock; two daughters, Christine Marzen, of Ames and Danielle Marzen, of Algona; two sons, Graydon and his wife, Aaron Marzen, of Ankeny and Matthew Marzen, of Algona; two stepsons, Jon and his wife, Annette King, of Mason City, and Jason King, of Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter, Chase Marzen; three step grandchildren, Kaylon Nicholson, Tyler Nicholson, and Deven King; his parents, Charles and Joyce Marzen, of rural Marble Rock; three sisters and their spouses, Theresa and Jim Schmitt, of Whittemore, Judy and Bill Vorhes, of Marble Rock, Andrea and Dennis Keifer, of Nora Springs; two brothers, Stephen Marzen, of Lewisville, Colorado, Vincent and his wife, Laurie Marzen, of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by his God daughter, Jennifer Vorhes Schmitt, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
