M. Merfeld Died
Monday Evening

Matt Merfeld, the son of John and Margaret Merfeld, was born July 9, 1872, in Floyd county.

He died at the Riverview hospital in Greene, following a stroke which he suffered about a month ago, on Monday, July 24, at 5:30 p. m. having reached the age of 78 years.

In 1893 he was united in marriage to Mary Brunner. To this union nine children were born: Roy of Bristow, Ed, George and Clyde of Greene, Harry and Vern of Dougherty, and Henry and Howard, who preceded him in death, also one daughter, Mrs. Laura Popes of Nashua.

After the couple were married they were located on a farm near Greene. He retired about 11 years ago.

He is survived by his wife, seven children, two sisters, Mrs. Frank Loostbrook [sic] of Aredrean, Minnesota, and Mrs. John Gotmer of Slater, Missouri; two brothers, Joe Merfeld of Charles City, and Will Merfeld of Independence; 29 grandchildern and 19 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic church at 9:00 a. m. Thursday, July 27, with Father Paul McGuire of Dougherty officiating.

Matt Merfeld of Greene Is Dead; Rites Thursday

GREENE, IOWA – Matt Merfeld, 78, died Monday night in Riverview hospital here of a stroke he suffered a month ago.

He was born July 9, 1872, in Floyd county, son of John and Mary [sic] Merfeld.

He married Mary Brunner at Greene in 1893. The couple farmed near Greene until retiring to town 11 years ago.

Surviving are the widow; seven children, Roy, Ed, George and Clyde, Greene; Harry and Verne, Dougherty; Mrs. Carl Popes, Nashua; 29 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Loastbrook, Adrian, Mich.; Mrs. John Gotmer, Slater, Mo.; two brothers, Joe, Charles City, and Will, Independence.

Two sons preceded him, Rev. Fr. Howard Merfeld and Harry.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a. m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic church. The body is at the home of his son, George, where a Rosary will be said Thursday night.
