Wallace Ebeneezer Gaylord, oldest son of Edson and Helen Mar Gaylord, was born July 21, 1862 and died on Thursday, February 2, 1939.
He was educated in Nora Springs, in a school room over a store building on main street in what is now known as "Old Town," the original part of Nora Springs. He also attended school at Osage and Fayette seminaries.
He first attended church at the first church in this section, a Baptist congregation in Rock Grove, which was a town started the same year Nora Springs was founded. At the age of 33 he made his first confession of faith in Christ, and was baptized by Eli M. Hutchinson, a friend of the family and an elder in the Church of Christ.
Mr. Gaylord was a farmer and one of the leading livestock raisers in this section. When he was a small boy he helped build the Gaylord houses, which were constructed of bricks, all of which he handled once or more.
Mr. Gaylord is survived by his sister, Miss Vienna Gaylord, who has been his housekeeper and nurse for the past 30 years. His health was poor following a bad fall suffered in 1908, and two subsequent falls injured his health to such an extent that he was confined to his bed much of the time for the past few years.
Mr. Gaylord was known for his love of truth, and his deep interest in literature, philosophy, drama and all things of beauty. He was buried Sunday, February 5, following funeral services at the Church of Christ, in the Rock Grove Cemetery.
