CHARLES CITY - Lois L. Stoakes, 93, of 807 5th St., Charles City, died Friday, (Sept. 17, 2010) at Cedar Health.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee, Charles City, with the Rev. Gary Van Wert officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services. Inurnment will be next to her husband in Riverside Cemetery. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Foster Grandparent Program. Lois Lucille Stoakes was born to William and Jesse (Vosseller) Stanley on Aug. 1, 1917, in Plainfield, Iowa. She was one of three children. She was a graduate of Charles City High School.
Lois was united in marriage to Herbert Donald Stoakes on Oct. 24, 1942, in Seattle, Wash. She had traveled there to get married just prior to him being shipped out for the service.

Lois was always a hard worker and obtained many different jobs and professions. Some included working in the state Capitol of Wyoming in the office of the cattle brand registration, as a dental hygienist in Charles City, operating her own dress shop called Lois' Toggery, working in the hospital in Fort Dodge, operating the Maverick Lounge in Mason City, and working in the Charles City Library.

The jobs she loved the most were being a homemaker and baby-sitting her grandchildren when they visited from out of state. Her love for children spilled over to her final beloved 15 years of service to the students of Jefferson and Lincoln Schools in Charles City, through the Foster Grandparent Program. She and her husband were also members of the Charles City Elks Lodge and she was a PEO member.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Jim, and his wife, Cathy (Kirkham) Stoakes, of Davenport; two grandchildren, Carly Stoakes of Davenport and Tyler Stoakes of Nevada; and one great-grandson, Croix.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, who died Sept. 14, 1988; her parents; sister, Lola Stanley, and brother, James Stanley.
