BORN IN AND BURIED IN FLOYD COUNTY

MASON CITY, IOWA - Lee "Roy" Maertens, 69, of Mason City died Saturday (Aug. 7, 2010) at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Dan Gerrietts officiating.

A gathering of friends and family will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Inurnment will be held in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, with military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Lee "Roy" Maertens Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Roy was born December 17, 1940, in Nora Springs, the son of Sylvin J. Maertens and Minnie (Boerjon) Heitland. He attended school in Nora Springs and graduated from high school in 1959.
After graduation, Roy served his country in the United States Air Force until 1963. Then he worked as a medical aide at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn., while completing Sales Training Incorporated in 1967.

Roy married Joan Hanson on August 5, 1967, and they made their home in Minneapolis for four years. In 1971, Renee was born and they moved to Mason City where Roy became director of materials management at North Iowa Medical Center. Steve was born in 1974. Roy also worked as director of purchasing at Mitchell County Hospital in Osage, before retiring in 2000.

Through the years, Roy enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, camping, fishing, playing cards, watching NASCAR, Vikings and Hawkeyes football, attending his grandkids' activities and most of all spending time with family and friends. Many will remember Roy or "G" as the life of the party. All those who knew him will miss his unique wit, humorous spirit and friendly personality. His family will also miss his caring soul, supportive nature and overwhelming love for family.

Those left to cherish the memory of his life include his wife of 43 years, Joan Maertens, of Mason City; his daughter, Renee, and husband, Scott Kofoot, of Fort Dodge; his son, Steve Maertens, of Clive; grandchildren, Cade and Kenzie Kofoot; his sister, Shirley McGonigle of Clarion; his brothers, Bill Maertens and wife, Iola, of Toledo, and John Maertens and wife, Pat, of Elk River, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
