E.W. 'BILL' HENKE

CHARLES CITY, IOWA - E. W. "Bill" Henke, 77, of 2616 Atlantic Court, Pharr, Texas, and 1107 Freeman St., Charles City, died Sunday (July 25, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, after suffering a heart attack at his residence.

A memorial funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 30, at the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Ferguson and Jackson Streets, Charles City, with the Rev. Jack L. Ivey, assisted by the Rev. William Green, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City, with graveside military honors conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

There will be no visitation. The Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.

E. W. "Bill" Henke was born November 9, 1921, in Charles City, the son of attorney W. G. Henke and Tillie Graf Henke. He received his education in the Charles City Public Schools and graduated with the Class of 1939. While in school, he was active in athletics and other school activities. He continued his education at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon and the University of Iowa.

He enlisted in the Naval Air Corps on July 10, 1942, and was called into active service on January 5, 1943. He received a Naval Discharge on August 20, 1943, and entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on August 28, 1943. He received his pilot's wings and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on August 4, 1944. He was separated from active duty on October 10, 1945.

Upon his honorable discharge, Mr. Henke returned to the University of Iowa Law School, where he received a juris doctor degree with distinction on September 6, 1945. He began his practice of law on October 14, 1947, in Charles City, and retired from it in January 1988.

On July 23, 1943, in Webster Grove, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Leona Dahlgren. Leona passed away June 13, 1992, in Rochester, Minnesota. He was then united in marriage to Marion McFarland McKay on January 28, 1993, in Charles City.

Mr. Henke was a member of the Floyd County Bar Association, Second Judicial District Bar Association and the Iowa State Bar Association. He served two terms as Floyd County attorney, a term as a member of the Second Judicial District Judicial Nominating Commission and also served as a member of the Floyd County Magistrate Appointment Commission.

For many years, he was active in the Republican Party in Iowa, having served as precinct committeeman, Floyd County chairman, Third District chairman and a member of the State Central Committee. He was chairman of the last Republican State Judicial Convention held August 2, 1960.

Mr. Henke belonged to the American Legion Shannon Wilson Post No. 174, of Charles City, where he was past commander. He was also a life member of the BPO Elks No. 418 and had served as a member of the trustees and of the house committee. Mr. Henke belonged to the former Charles City Country Club, where he had served as a member of the board of directors and as president.

Those thankful for sharing Bill's life are his wife, Marion, of Pharr, Texas; three daughters and their husbands, Trisha and Ray Murray, of Hampton, Susan and Jan Meyer, of Laurel and Lori and Ron Kaglic, of Goldsboro, N.C.; a sister, Joan K. Henke, of Hemet, Calif.; nine grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; Marion's sons, Mike and his wife, Jaqueline McKay, of Port Orchard, Wash., and Bill McKay, of Monterey, Calif.; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Leona; and a son, William Henke.

Fullerton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
