Vanita A. Workman, 97, of Floyd, died Saturday afternoon, July 17, 2010, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services for Vanita Workman will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd. Pastor Martha Bennett will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, rural Floyd.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue an hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Vanita A. Workman was born January 25, 1913 on a farm near Floyd, Iowa. She was the daughter of Wencel Joseph and Minnie Christine Hanf Schmidt. Vanita attended Floyd Consolidated School graduating in 1930. She also attended Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa. Vanita taught in local schools before she married J. Ralph Workman May 18,1938 at her parents home near Floyd. The couple farmed near Floyd until Ralph retired in 1970. Vanita also taught in the Floyd County schools for nineteen years and recently received an Honorary Award for Outstanding Teaching from the University Of Northern Iowa College Of Education recognizing her for service to the Floyd community.

Vanita was a member of the ISEA, Oakwood Cemetery Association and a lifelong member of Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd where she served faithfully holding many offices in United Methodist Woman, teaching Sunday school and managing the Vacation Bible School program. Vanita loved to play cards, lunch at Dugan’s Restaurant and spend time with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Deep appreciation and thanks are due to those special individuals who provided home health care and support during the final months before her death: Debbie Auringer, Renee’ Burdette and Kyle Ewalt attended to her on a daily basis. Thanks also to the wonderful people at Hospice who managed her last month of care.

Surviving are two children, David (Jean) Workman, Deltona, Florida, Keith (Evelyn) Workman, Kempner, Texas, four grandchildren, Alan (Jennifer) Workman St. Petersburg, Florida, Julia Workman, Chico, California, Tara Workman, Lampasas, Texas, Amanda Workman, Temple,Texas, and niece, Sandra Ewalt, Floyd, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Ralph Workman, on January 9, 1989 and her brother Robert Schmidt.
