Philip Jerrell

MASON CITY — Philip Jerrell, 76, of 1838 Springview Drive, died Monday (March 16, 1998) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. There will be no visitation since his body was cremated. Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street N.E., is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Philip Jerrell Memorial Fund.

Philip Jerrell was born April 18, 1921, in Idaho, the son of Thomas and Louise (Buckman) Jerrell. The family moved to Nora Springs when he was 8 years old. He received his education at Nora Springs schools. Philip joined the United States Marines in 1940 and was one of the 90 Marines on Midway Island at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He participated in several island campaigns until the close of the war.

Following his discharge from the Marines, he returned to Nora Springs where he joined his brother in farming. He later worked at Armour Foods for several years.

On September 7, 1968, he married Marjorie Benn of Mason City. He was a member of the Elks, a lifelong member of VFW, Post #733, Mason City, and a member of St. James Lutheran Church. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, and also enjoyed all kinds of sports.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Jerrell, Mason City; one daughter, Cindy Mennenga, and her husband, Loren, Meservey; two brothers, John Jerrell, and his wife, Betty, Tonapa, Nev., and Tommy Jerrell, and his wife, Sue, Clear Water, Fla.; one sister, Nadine Harmon, and her husband, Don, Marshalltown; two stepchildren from his first marriage, Bob Goggen, and his wife, Linda, San Diego, Calif., and Jane Phalen, Mason City; seven step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Helen.
