CHARLES CITY, IOWA -- Elsie G. Hurst, 83, of Charles City, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City, after a brief illness.

CHARLES CITY - Elsie G. (Mrs. Roy) Hurst, 93, of the Salsbury Baptist Home and formerly of 806 Richings St., died Tuesday (Nov. 16, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert Streets, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag and the Rev. Mark A. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.

CHARLES CITY - Elsie G. (Mrs. Roy) Hurst, 93, of the Salsbury Baptist Home and formerly of 800 Eighth St. and Richings Street, Charles City, died unexpectedly Tuesday (Nov. 16, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City, following a brief illness.

A funeral service for Elsie Hurst will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert Streets, Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag and the Rev. Mark A. Anderson, officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Mrs. Hurst, the former Elsie Gerharda Hopkes, was born May 9, 1906, in rural Shell Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Bena (Reints) Hopkes. She was baptized by the Rev. Siegfried Siefkes at the Butler Center Lutheran Church, south of Clarksville. She then was confirmed at the Pleasant Hill Church, rural Nashua. Elsie received her education during this time, attending school one-half day in German and one-half day in English.

She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Harry Fields in Clarksville for five years. She then moved to Charles City where she worked in the office of Dr. Seymore for three years.

On March 6, 1932, at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, she was united in marriage to Roy Alfred Hurst. The couple farmed south of Charles City. They retired in 1966 and took up residence at 800 Eighth St., in Charles City. After 20 years, the couple made their home at 806 Richings St.

Mr. Hurst died Thursday, April 11, 1996, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, shortly after their 64th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Hurst moved to Assisted Living at the Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles City, three months ago.

Elsie's life revolved around her church, which was the focal point not only of her worship, but also of her many activities and social life. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the Ladies Aid Circle of the church.

She was a member of the Charles City Women's Club, the FCNB Heritage Club, the Charles City Area Senior Citizen's Center, the Farm Bureau, the Christian Ones, the Step Forward Group and many card and neighborhood groups. Mrs. Hurst was a member of the Cedar Side Club. For 28 years, she served as a Gray Lady for the American Red Cross Volunteers.

Mrs. Hurst enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and especially keeping in touch with family and friends.

Those thankful for sharing Elsie's life include two daughters and their husbands, Shirley and Bruce Pennington, of Rudd, Iowa and Darlene and James Dommel, of Golden Valley, Minn.; five grandchildren, Julie Westendorf, Cindy Snell, Diann Honadel, Christine Keating and David Dommel; eight great-grandchildren, Laura, Patrick and Nathan Snell, Elizabeth and Sarah Westendorf, Jacob and Zachary Honadel and James Keating; two sisters-in-law, DeLores Hopkes, of Gainesville, Fla., and Gloria Hopkes, of Scottsdale, Ariz. and two nephews, Richard and Marvin Hopkes.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Osterman; two brothers, George and Bruno Hopkes; a granddaughter, Debra Ann Pennington; and a great-granddaughter, Andrea Snell.
