Rites Set for Aged Resident
Former Charles City Merchant Summoned

Charles City, Iowa — Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Hauser funeral home for W. C. Herbrecht, 87, one of Charles City’s pioneer businessmen, who died Saturday morning at his home, 901 Blunt street, where he has been an invalid for 7 years. The Rev. Harold W. Putney, pastor of the First Congregational church, will officiate and interment will be in Riverside cemetery.

Mr. Herbrecht was a member of the Congregational church, an Elk and the oldest member of the Masonic lodge.

Mr. Herbrecht was first employed in Charles City by Hecht Brothers dry goods merchants. Then he joined partnership with John G. Legel, Sr., in the grocery and drug business in 1884. This partnership was later dissolved and Mr. Herbrecht operated his own grocery store for many years in the Gilbert hotel block until his retirement in 1919.

Mr. Herbrecht was born in Varhenholtz, Lippe Detmold, Germany, March 8, 1861, son of William and Louise Bornstein Herbrechtsmeyer. The family emigrated to America June 25, 1865, and settled in Freeport, Ill. They later located on a farm near Charles City, March 9, 1870, where he attended rural school in Ulster township.

He had his name shortened to Herbrecht, from Herbrechtsmeyer for business reasons. In 1894 he married Daisy O. Smith, who died Nov. 18, 1917. They had one son, Harold, who was killed in an automobile accident, Sept. 20, 1918. Since then he has been living alone with a help of a housekeeper, Miss Clara Meinecke.

He is survived by 10 nephews and nieces, W. A. Herbrechtsmeyer, Fred Stoeber, Mrs. Sarah Ortmeyer and Mrs. Ella Klages, all of Charles City; Arthur W. Stoeber, Des Moines; William Stoeber, Tucson, Ariz.; Ralph O. Stoeber, Huxley; A. M. Stoeber, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Carie Colwell, Des Moines, and Mrs. Lucy Larson, Grand Rapids, Mich.
