Marcus was born in rural Marble Rock, on Feb. 19, 1918, the son of John and Louise (Vala) Hermann. He grew up in the Marble Rock/Roseville area, where he farmed. In March of 1941, he was inducted into the Army, completing his training in Northern Ireland, Scotland and England. He was among the first group of Americans that entered World War II. As part of the 34th Division, 168th Infantry, Headquarters Company, he served his country in Algeria, Tunisia and Italy. Marcus was honorably discharged in June of 1945, achieving the rank of tech sergeant.

He was united in marriage to Anna Mae Crahan on Jan. 20, 1948, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. In 1966, Marcus opened up his own repair shop in Marble Rock, Hermann Repair. At the age of 50, he began drag racing, a hobby which he would compete in until he was 72! In 1973, his son, would join him in the repair business. They continued to work together until Marcus' retirement in 1984.

Anna Mae and Marcus moved to Rockford in 1999 and would continue to live there until 2005 when Marcus moved to the care center in Nora Springs.

Marcus was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus and was very active in the Marble Rock American Legion Post No. 387. He attended many Army reunions and participated in many parades during his lifetime. He also enjoyed restoring John Deere tractors and was very proud of his B and G tractors. Most of all, Marcus loved spending time with his family.
