NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Charles Wesley Hudson, 57, of 603 Riverview Drive, Rockford, died Nov. 7, 2009, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church, 21 Third Street N.W., Rockford, with the Rev. Judy Wooten officiating. Memorials may be directed to Elizabeth Hewelt to go toward a memorial for Charlie and help defray costs.

He had been diagnosed on his birthday with terminal lung cancer which spread to his bones. Charlie had a long, tough fight. Creator in his mercy has taken him home.

Charles was born July 7, 1952, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Paul Franklyn and Gloria (Teagarden) Hudson Sr. He had been living in Rockford for the last seven and a half years. A member of the Army Fifth Corps of Engineers (class of '70), Charlie was very active in the Veterans Day Celebration and for three years had tried to host a brunch following the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock schools' presentation. He was also a member of Tsali of North Carolina, a member of the Muskogee Creek Warrior Society of Florida, a member of the Kiowa Gourd Society and was a Peace Chief of the Florida Cherokee Association in Wauchula, Florida.

He worked at Gerard, now called Four Oaks, for five years mentoring the kids that he loved so much until he broke his back in a very bad auto accident in 2007.

Charlie was active in Rockford and had joined the Visions group and served on the Main Street committee to share ideas and see that they were implemented to better Rockford and attract other residents to join the community as well as tourists and visitors. Charlie loved nature, gardening, ponding, the outdoors and many cultural activities as well as the preservation of traditions in his cultural background, not to mention his "fur" children.

He is survived by his significant other, the Rev. Elizabeth K. Hewelt, Rockford; his "special" daughter, Jennifer Hewelt (Smith Shoars), Northwood; his "fur" children, including his loved and much spoiled Buster; brother, Paul (Vickie) Franklyn Hudson Jr., Missouri; half-brother, Jerry (Sharon) Smith, Arkansas; and three other half-siblings, Margie, Jeanne and Paul Leonard.
