CHARLES CITY, IOWA -- Doris Aird, 95, of Charles City, died Friday, September 18, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Pastor Gary VanWert of Trinity United Methodist Church and Pastor Paul Phillips of the Gospel Lighthouse will officiate at the funeral. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Doris Bucknell Aird was born April 20, 1914, in Floyd County, the daughter of Arthur and Anna (Meek) Bucknell. She graduated in 1931 as valedictorian from the Floyd school.

On October 16, 1935, she was united in marriage to John Aird at Charles City. For many years she was a housekeeper and for over 50 years she was self employed as a wallpaper hanger. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and helped prepare many meals that were served at the church over the years. Doris was also director of St. Charles #2 country school, member of the McKinley Home Craft, volunteered for both the Gray Ladies and Pink Ladies, and was a past Girl Scout leader.

Her interests included vegetable and flower gardening, playing 500, horses especially the chuckwagon races, and cooking in both small and large quanities. Both Doris and John were avid sports fans following the Comettes softball team for many years. Doris was always very fond of children whether her own or others and enjoyed sharing her life with them.

Living family members include three children, Karla Breed of Marshalltown; Alan (Colleen) Aird and Andrew (Lori) Aird both of Charles City; seven grandchildren, Kristine (Philip) Does, Linda (Ron) Pexa, Aaron Aird, Anne Nelson, Angela Aird, Lisa Aird and Amy Aird; 13 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois Waid of Floyd and Irma Kay of Manchester.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on July 3, 1999; two brothers, Loren and Cletus Bucknell; and two sisters, Iola Quimby and Elma Belknap.
