NORA SPRINGS - Alvera Jeanette Hanson, 88, of 907 West Congress St., Nora Springs, died Tuesday (Aug. 4, 2009) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Ave., Osage, with Pastor Dennis Hanson officiating. Burial will be at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Alvera.

Alvera was born April 16, 1921, in Plymouth, the daughter of Joe and Clara (Brown) Gasteiger. She graduated from Plymouth High School in 1939, then married Glen Hanson Oct. 15, 1940, at the Mason City Methodist parsonage. To this union seven children were born.

For the majority of her life, Alvera was a housewife, taking care of her children and home. She was also a cook at the Rockford Country Club for 15 years.

In her spare time, Alvera enjoyed dancing, bowling, playing cards and sewing. She also liked to collect cardinal memorabilia. Most of all Alvera loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Alvera had been a member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church since 1940.

Alvera is survived by her children, Shirley (Jack) Arnett of Golden Shores, Ariz., Sharon (Dennis) Field of Nora Springs, Joel (Peggy) Hanson of Osage, Jerald Hanson and Bridget Neilon of Northwood, Kris (Del) Rieman of Newell, Kurt (Linda) Hanson of Nora Springs and Shelley Hanson of Mason City; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Alberta Dicken, Pace, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother Marie; her husband; her grandson, Troy Alan Esser; her stepgrandson, Chris Field; her brother and sister-in-law, Harold (Una) Gasteiger; and her brother-in-law, Jack Dicken.
