Elizabeth “Betty” Starr, 82, of Charles City, died Friday morning, July 3, 2009, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Elizabeth Mae Chambers was born June 23, 1927, in Howard County, the daughter of Raymond and Sarah (Weston) Chambers. In 1946, she graduated from the McIntire High School.

On March 6, 1949, she was united in marriage to Buster Starr in Charles City. Betty was a country school teacher for two years and later was a janitor at the City Hall where she helped Buster. In her younger years, Betty was active in the Girl Scouts as a leader and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Her interests included sewing, baking, stamp collecting and gardening. She took special interest in Zoya her daughter’s pet cat and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Living family members include her two daughters, Debra (Mark) Bonzer of Charles City and Carnette Starr of Charles City; two grandchildren Zach and Megan Bonzer of Charles City; two brothers, Raymond (Marie) Chambers of Charles City and Freeman (Della) Chambers of Longmont, Colo.; sister, Virginia (Hurvey) Tudor of Colwell; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and three brothers, James, Forest and Ned Chambers.
