Parents Get
Details of
Son's Death

NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fuller of Nora Springs, who were informed by telegram on June 20 that their son, Pvt. Edward M. Fuller, had been missing in action in Italy since May 31, and later by a second wire, that he was killed in action on that date, have this week received a letter from Lt. Col. Bruno G. Marchi, Private Fuller's commanding officer, giving them some of the details concerning his death.

The letter reads, in part, as follows: "Edward was killed by fragments of a shell. His end came swiftly but mercifully. He was buried by one of our chaplains in an American cemetery -- 'Somewhere in Italy' -- with full military honors. He sleeps beside his brave comrades in arms who fell with him -- with those who loved their country and home, but placed their futy first. A memorial service was held for all the valient men of our command who laid down their lives in the battle. High tribute of praise was expressed, the salute was fired and taps were sounded for all the men like Edward who gave their lives for the country they loved."

In tribute to the son of the local couple, Lt. Col. Marchi wrote, "As battalion commander of your son's unit, I wish to express, in behalf of the men and officers of this command, our deep and sincere sympathy in your great loss. We share with you in your sorrow. Like so many American parents you have given your son to the cause of freedom. Edward was a courageous soldier, a good citizen, and a stalwart friend to all who knew him. For the country he loved and the great ideals we represent as Americans, he gave his life in the service of his country."

Mr. and Mrs. Fuller received Wednesday the Purple Heart posthumously awarded their son "for military merit and for wounds received in action resulting in his death," also a memorial certificate signed by the president.
