NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Opal M. Mathers, 98, of 1355 160th St., Nora Springs, died Sunday (May 31, 2009) at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs, with the Rev. Jim Turner and the Rev. Wendy Johannesen, officiating. Burial will be at Rock Grove Cemetery, Nora Springs. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel.

Opal was born on November 21, 1910, the daughter of Roland and Victoria (McKee) Adams in Rudd, Iowa. She graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1929, and was involved with the women's basketball team in 1928 that was featured on Iowa Public Television.

She married Victor Mathers on April 29, 1933, in Nora Springs, and to this union two children were born. Opal was a homemaker and farm wife. She loved being outside all day, working on the farm. She especially enjoyed mowing the lawn, gardening and painting outdoor buildings. She also loved horses and raced ponies when she was young. Opal was very active all of her life and was known for her hard work.

She is survived by her son Terry (Beverly) Mathers, of Rudd; her grandchildren, Rhonda (Scott) George, of Slater, Jolene (Tim) Rogers, of Ringsted, Julie (Joe) Eggena, of Greene, John (Kim) Field, of Garner, Jerome Field, of Garner and Laura (Jason) Boyd, of Charles City; 15 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren; her uncle, Ken McKee, of Phoenix, Ariz.; her aunt, Marge McKee, of Duluth, Minn.; and her special cousin, Melva Butts, of Waterloo.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Victor in 1990; son Clark in 1985; daughter-in-law Edna in 2005; sister Maude in 1991; and her great-grandson Dean in 1990.
