CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Nolan N. Townsend, 92, of Charles City, died Monday morning, May 25, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for Nolan Townsend will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City with Pastors Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

Nolan Noah Townsend was born July 4, 1916, in Niles Township, the son of Harold and Gladys (Noah) Townsend. He received his education from Towner and Ballard country schools. On Jan. 12, 1941, he was united in marriage to Katharine Bonsall at Charles City. As a youth, he worked as a farm hand and later was employed for Jasperson Ball, Capital Tobacco, Oliver Corp., Ardery Transportation and Sperry Transportation. Nolan retired from White Farm on July 1, 1981.

He was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose.

His interests included raising and showing American Saddle Bred Horses in fine harness shows, dancing and playing cards.

Living family members include his two children, Nola Kerulis of Dubuque and Roger (Pat) Townsend of Charles City; six grandchildren, Catherine (Sam) Theodore, Victoria (Robert) Knochenmus, Kimberly Townsend, Roger (Amber) Townsend Jr., Jason (Angie) LaPolice and Chad (Heather) LaPolice; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-laws, Viola Townsend of Belmond, Evelyn Bonsall of Waterloo and Effie Miller of Charles City; special friend, Elleanora Rex of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son-in-law, Frank Kerulis; great-grandson, Francis Fletcher; three brothers, Marvin Townsend, Merlyn Townsend and Barton Townsend; sister, Neoma Brooks; and five brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
