ROCKFORD, IOWA - Kenneth Neuhaus, 58, of 210 Second St. S.E., Rockford, died unexpectedly on Thursday, October 7, 1999, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City, after being stricken at his place of employment in Nashua.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main Ave., Rockford, with the Rev. John Albrecht officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, with graveside military honors conducted by INI Staff Delta Battery, 2nd Battalion, 14th Marines, of Waterloo.

Friends may call to greet the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main Ave., Rockford. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church. The casket will remain closed according to Ken's wishes.

Kenneth LeRoy Neuhaus was born July 9, 1941, in rural Shell Rock, the son of Helmut "Pappy" and Dora Evaline (Jurgens) Neuhaus. He attended school at Shell Rock and graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1960.

Ken entered the U.S. Marine Corps immediately after high school. He served at Camp Pendleton and in Vietnam, as well as being stationed in San Diego and 29 Palms, Calif., and Yuma, Ariz., rising to the rank of lance corporal. Following his honorable discharge, he entered the Marine Corps Reserves for two years. He returned to Iowa and on November 17, 1965, at the Methodist Church in Owasa, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Jean Tidman.

The couple made their home in Hampton, where Kenneth began to work at Chamberlain Manufacturing Co. In 1969, they moved to Rockford where Ken began to work for the former Rock Island Rail Line. After the railroad closed down, he became a route driver for Farner Hewitt (Farner Bocken) in Charles City. In 1974, he went to work for Soukup Manufacturing in Sheffield, where he remained for 11 and aanad and a half years. Ken then became a custodian for the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School District, working for the school through the fire until 1991. He then did construction work for a couple of years. For the past seven years, he had been an electrician at the Featherlite Manufacturing Company in Nashua, where he was employed at the time of his death.

Kenneth was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford, where he had served on the church council. He belonged to the Lutheran Brotherhood and served as a director for the Luther League of Zion Lutheran while his daughters were in the league. He was a former member of the Rockford City Council. Ken was very proud of his Marine Corps service, and loved being a member of the Marine Corps League, North Iowa Detachment, where he served as the adjutant paymaster. He also belonged to the American Legion post of Rudd.

For 11 years, he served as the co-chair for the Post Prom Party of R-R-MR High School. In his spare time, Ken enjoyed woodworking and fishing at his "favorite spot." He loved gardening, especially when his tomatoes outgrew those of his sons-in-law. Ken was a special grandpa to his four grandchildren with whom he loved to spend time.

Those thankful for sharing Ken's life are his wife, Carolyn; his two daughters and their husbands, Carla and Jim Miller of Mason City and Valarie and Steve Sliger of Rockford; his parents, Helmut and Dora Neuhaus of Hampton; three brothers and their wives, John and Jean Neuhaus of Overland Park, Kan., Wayne and Gloria Neuhaus of Medford, Minn., and Dale and Lori Neuhaus of Racine, Wis.; four grandchildren, Jordan Spurbeck-Miller and Madison Miller, of Mason City, and Mikayla and Cassidy Sliger of Rockford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, (515) 756-3311.
