CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Geraldine P. King, age 97, of Charles City died Saturday (March 28, 2009) at Cedar Health Center in Charles City.

Geraldine Philips King was born Nov. 24, 1911, to Cleveland and Myrtle (Shaffer) Phillips in New Hampton. She attended school in New Hampton and graduated from Grinnell College in 1932. On May 17, 1932, she was united in marriage to Clyde King in Lancaster, Missouri.

Jerry was a woman of many interests. Bridge was her passion, followed closely by quilting. She learned to quilt late in life and made quilts for each member of her family. Some of her other hobbies were basket making, knitting, tatting, sewing and working with stained glass. She was an avid reader and usually had a jigsaw puzzle to work on. Her home was filled with antiques, collected and refinished by her. She was a good cook and was still trying new recipes into her 90s.

During her lifetime, Jerry was active in the Charles City Arts Association, Mayflower Descendants, Colonial Dames, 19th Amendment Society and the Charles City Library Board. She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years.

Jerry was a lifetime member of City Improvement and the Hospital Auxiliary. She was a 75+ member of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter JQ.

Jerry is survived by her two daughters, Nancy (Kent) Hobert of Martinez, Calif., and Bunny (Steve) Fox of West Des Moines; four grandchildren, Timothy Hobert, Beth Hobert, Amy (Tom) Beaty and Roger (Shelly) Fox; six great grandchildren, Timothy Hobert, Jordan and Anna Fox, Ryan, Julia and Luke Beaty; one sister, Ruth Philips Natvig Kilmer; and one brother, Robert Shaffer Phillips.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Clyde King, and an infant son, Philip.

Memorials may be given to the Charles City Public Library or the Charles City Arts Association.
