NORA SPRINGS, IOWA — David Carrol Miller, 60, of 715 Fourth St. N.W., Nora Springs, passed away Friday evening (July 8, 2005) at his home following a massive heart attack.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Harry Koelker officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City. A prayer vigil will be recited beginning at 6:30 p.m. that evening. The visitation will continue on Tuesday at the church, one hour prior to David's services.

He was born in Little Rock, Ark., on Sept. 28, 1944, to Roberta (Smith) Miller and Werner Alvin Miller. David grew up in the Levy area of North Little Rock surrounded by his extended family and graduated from North Little Rock High School in 1962. In 1966, he graduated from Little Rock University with degrees in biology and chemistry.

In 1967, David moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he began his career in social work, first at San Antonio State Hospital, and then as a caseworker for the Bexar County Department of Public Welfare. David attended graduate school at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio and graduated with an M.S.W. in 1975.

David married Brenda Hungerford on July 12, 1975, in San Antonio and they lived in San Antonio and North Little Rock for the next 18 years. In 1979, a son, Timothy Joel, was born to David and Brenda in Little Rock. In 1990, David accepted a position as a licensed social worker in the mental health unit of Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, where he continued until his death. He was also an adjunct faculty member at Buena Vista University where he taught courses in the field of human services and was honored as the 2001-2002 "Faculty of the Year-Mason City Center." For 10 years, David served as a board member of the North Iowa Transition Center. He was a member of Social Workers Helping Social Workers and the National Association of Social Workers. David was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous with 29 years of sobriety and was a certified drug and alcohol counselor.

David was known by his patients as a compassionate, gentle, soft-spoken person who listened without judging, but guided others through his thoughtful questions. He had a special connection to persons with addictions and those suffering from mental illness as well as their families, and was often stopped out in public by those he'd counseled, offering him an update about themselves. Throughout his 60 years of life, David was a man of deep Christian faith, and at the Easter Vigil of 2003, he became a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. David embraced his Catholic faith with the enthusiasm and joy of a new convert, and spent many hours reading and learning about the church, its people and teachings.

David was an avid reader, a trivia buff, and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an Arkansas Razorbacks fan of both football and basketball and very proud of his Southern roots. He will be remembered as having a dry sense of humor and enjoyed "people watching." He was a proud and loving father to his son, Tim, and a devoted and patient husband to his wife, Brenda.

David was preceded in death by his mother, father and grandparents.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Brenda, of Nora Springs, and son, Timothy, of Madison, Wis.
