CAROLYN M. FISHER

ROCKFORD, IOWA — Carolyn M. Fisher, 75 of 204 First Ave. S.W., died early Saturday morning (Sept. 25, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services for Carolyn will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main Ave., Rockford. Officiating will be the Rev. Patricia Shaw. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main Ave., Rockford.

Carolyn was one of 13 children born to Martin and Suzie “Weibrandt” Mehmen in Floyd on May 19, 1929. She was a life-long resident of Rockford and graduated from high school there. In her very early years, she worked for the Ruckdashel Cafe in Rockford. She was united in marriage to Delmer Fisher on Aug. 25, 1949, in Albert Lea, Minn., and they then traveled to Harmony, Minn., to see the caves.

She settled down to a full-time job of raising her six children. She provided a loving babysitting and day care for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which helped her children out while they worked. While caring for her family, she would often play cards or board games and always made sure they had a little candy to take home.

She raised a huge garden and canned to make sure her family was well fed. Her claims to the food hall of fame were her dill pickles and bean soup. When her children came home from school, there was fresh-baked bread, doughnuts or cinnamon rolls. Her entertainment was often going for rides or playing bingo (even though she never told anyone how much it cost to win). One of her fondest times was in 1968 when everyone loaded onto a train to go and visit California and the relatives.

Over the past six years, her health deteriorated and the past year she had been confined to her home she shared with her daughter, Carol, and her husband, Dennis, who continued with her care following Carol’s death. Her sense of humor carried with her until the very end. Nary a complaint or regret throughout her life.

Those who shared in Carolyn’s life include her three sons and three daughters, Allan and his wife, LuAnn, Clear Lake, Alvin and his wife, Vicki, Charles City, Robin and her husband, Scott Shafer, Rockford, Sandy and her husband, Kevin Jones, Aredale, Jim and his wife, Melissa, and son-in-law, Dennis Fenton, all of Rockford; her one remaining sister, Anne Sorenson, Austin, Minn., and brother, Jerry “Sonny” Mehmen, Canoga Park, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, Duane Fisher, Charlet Uker, Corey and Melinda Fisher, Jennifer and Jessica Shafer, Stephanie Fisher, Angela Jones, Tanya, Tera and Tiffany Fisher, and Delmer and Jerry Fenton. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Dustin and Dalton Fisher, and Madison, Cole and Cale Fenton, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmer, in March 1973; daughters Margaret as a stillborn, and Carol Fenton in September 2003; four brothers, Bud, Bill, George and John Mehmen; six sisters, Suzie, Allie, Gertie, Katie, Effie and Dorothy; her parents; her great-grandson, Jordan Fenton, and a longtime special friend, Jerry Winters.
