Lena M. Herrick, 102, died Sunday afternoon, Feb. 1, 2009 at Cedar Health in Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa.

A Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua with Msgr. Stanley Hayek officiating. Christy Laube will be the organist and lead the congregation in singing “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” Rebecca Lynne Johnson will sing “Whispering Hope.”

Burial will be in Horton Cemetery rural Waverly with Richard Biretz, Kenneth Biretz, Charles Biretz, Larry Peters, Kevin Vikturek and Kenton Vikturek serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday and from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Friday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home by Adelia Biretz. Memorials may be directed to the family. Lena M. Herrick was born April 7, 1906 in Virginia, the daughter of Andrew J. and Grace F. (Fox) Baker. At the age of six, Lena moved to Independence, Iowa with her family. They later moved to Aredale where she attended country schools.

She was united in marriage to Harry L. Peters on May 3, 1927 in Horton. To that union five children were born. They moved to Nashua in October of 1942. Harry passed away June 28, 1956. Lena married George M. Herrick on Oct. 24, 1958 in Nashua, he passed away September 5, 1985. Lena worked for the Oliver Corporation in Charles City for 23 years as a materials handler and on the assembly line before retiring in 1967. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua.

Lena is survived by one son, Melvin Peters of Mountain Home, Arizona; two daughters, Adelia Biretz of Waterloo and Myrna Vikturek of Charles City; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harry peters and George Herrick; one son, Leroy Peters on March 15, 1987; one daughter, Carol DeGrotte on Oct. 29, 1988 and four grandchildren.
