CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Maxine Rouse, 83, a former resident of 201 Baldwin St. in Charles City, died Thursday (Feb. 12, 2004) at the Colonial Manor of Elma.

A funeral Mass for Maxine Rouse will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City. The rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and the vigil scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the Mass.

Maxine Marie Rouse was born Oct. 21, 1920, at Nashua, the daughter of Thomas and Minnie (Spear) Elliott. She graduated from the Colwell High School.

On June 1, 1939, she was united in marriage to Leo Rouse. They farmed in the Colwell area for many years. Leo died on Dec. 26, 1963.

Maxine continued living on the farm until 1965, when she moved into Charles City. For 20 years Maxine worked as a nurse’s aid at the Chautauqua Guest homes. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Michael’s Circle, and Senior Citizens.

Maxine enjoyed fishing, playing cards and bingo and generally being with people.

Her family was always very special to Maxine, and when the grandchildren became active in various activities she was always in attendance for them.

Living family members include four sons, Elliott “Duff” (Patsy) Rouse of Charles City, Eugene “Nick” (Kathy) Rouse of Denver, Colo., Tom (Gail) Rouse, and Dennis (Kim) Rouse, both of Charles City; four daughters, JoAnn Chambers, Suzanne (Jerry) Hartwell, Linda (Bill) Mitchell, and Lora (Monte) Millard, all of Charles City; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill (Patti) Elliott of Del Ray Beach, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son William “Willie” Rouse; and two brothers, Henry “Hank” Elliott and Laurence “Bud” Elliott.
