RUDD, IOWA — Shirley Pennington, 68, of 2011 130th St., Rudd, died Sunday (Jan. 11, 2004) at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz.
Funeral services for Shirley Pennington will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
Shirley Ann Hurst Pennington was born April 13, 1935, in Floyd County, the daughter of Roy and Elsie (Hopkes) Hurst. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Shirley graduated from Charles City High School in 1953 and from Gates College with a secretarial and accounting degree.
She worked for Wise Baker CPA in Waterloo and for Sunnyside Memory Gardens until 1959.
Shirley was united in marriage to Bruce Pennington on June 2, 1957, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. They farmed northeast of Rudd their en-tire lives.
She was an active member of the Lutheran Church, where she had taught Sunday School and catechism classes.
She had held many offices in the Floyd County Cattle Women, had served as president of the Iowa Cattle Women from 1987-88, on the Iowa Cattlemen’s Board, the ANCW Executive Board and on a Governors Commission from 1994-97.
Her interest in youth was seen in her being a 4-H leader and serving on the 4-H Foundation. Shirley was named the Iowa Outstanding Cattle Woman in 1984 and was chosen Iowa Master Farm Homemaker in 1992.
She will be remembered for her cooking and baking, winning entries of food at the State Fair, her love of traveling in the motor home, visiting, and keeping in touch with her relatives and friends.
Living family members in-clude her husband, Bruce, of Rudd; two daughters, Julie Westendorf of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Cindy (Mark) Snell of Ames; five grandchildren, Laura, Patrick and Nathan Snell, and Elizabeth and Sarah Westendorf, and a sister, Darlene (Jim) Dommel of Golden Valley, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Debra Pennington, and a granddaughter, Andrea Snell.
