FERTILE, IOWA - Dennis Lee Bonwell, 56, of 407 W. Main, died on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 16, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt and Pastor Ed Bard officiating. Burial will be in Riverton Cemetery, Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with a Masonic service at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Denny L. Bonwell Memorial Fund in care of Cherri Bonwell 1015 Hyland Lane, League City, TX 77573.
Dennis Lee Bonwell was born on December 13, 1952, in Charles City, the son of Donald and Dorthy (Usher) Bonwell. He graduated in 1971 from Charles City High School; while in school he excelled in football, wrestling, track and baseball.
Denny was united in marriage to the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Cherri Bunn, on Sept. 3, 1971; to this union two children were born, Camrean and Jodi. As a young man Denny worked at John Deere and White Farm. He began his career with Fareway in 1980 at the Charles City store, retiring in 2002 as the meat market manager of the Clear Lake store.
After retiring, Denny was always looking for new business adventures which included opening Lake Liquors in Clear Lake in 1999. He managed the VFW in Clear Lake and later opened the Sundown Bar and Grill in Hanlontown in 2004.
Denny loved traveling, golfing, coon hunting and fishing with his brothers and was an avid sports enthusiast who was always rooting for the "winning team"! His greatest love was spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. Denny greatly enjoyed being social with his friends at the VFW and Rookies in Clear Lake.
Denny was very active in the North Iowa Shrine, Masonic Lodge, Mason City, where he reached worshipful master in 1998; he was a member of the Scottish rite and the Royal Order of the Jesters. One of Denny's greatest accomplishments was sponsoring a young boy into the Shriners Hospital.
Denny is survived by his wife, Cherri Bonwell, of Fertile; children, Camrean Bonwell and fianc�e, Loretta Oelkers, of Mason City, Jodi (Mark) Bergan of League City, Texas; grandchildren, Hailey Bonwell and Jack and Theodore Bergan; three brothers, four sisters, three sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law; along with several nieces and nephews.
Denny was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Dorthy Bonwell; a sister, Cheri Cleveland; a brother, Jim Bonwell; nieces, Shelly and Rhonda; and one nephew, Danny.
